Led by Marshal Francis Tukey, police conduct a raid on today’s North Street. One hundred fifty-three are arrested, including nine men are arrested as “tipplers, vagabonds, pipe players, etc.” and 92 women as “keepers of brothels, noisy and disorderly houses, violators of the license and Sunday laws, etc.” Many of the women are given suspended sentences, then proceed to hire themselves out as domestic servants.
